About the Artist
A little background...
Born and raised in California as Linda Taylor
UC Berkeley grad - Masters in Architecture 1974
Started Taylor & Associates Architects in Newport Beach in 1979, which grew beyond my wildest dreams and became one of the foremost healthcare design firms. Although I retired as president in 2007, the firm has continued to grow in size and prestige under the name Taylor Design (website - wearetaylor.com) and as I watch from my Board of Director's seat, they continue to amaze me year after year with their great work, great staff and great leadership.
Married David Ullman in 1982 and ended up with some terrific kids (his and ours) and a lifetime of incredible adventures all over the world thanks to his international renown in competitive sailing. If you haven't heard of him, then you probably don't race sailboats, but you can always google him.
Although I did maintain some of my drawing skills in my years as an architect, I did not start painting until about 2010, when I began taking watercolor classes from Chris Sullivan. I have also had workshops and mentoring from Katherine Chang Liu and Skip Lawrence. Other than that, I try to work daily in my studio in Santa Barbara.
My work is about...
Finding combinations of subject matter and paint that communicate bits of life that have meaning for me, and perhaps for others. I shamelessly look for ways to connect with the human experience in the same way that a song or photo or poem can connect and express things that could not have been expressed any other way.
Sometimes it is the subject matter that interests me and sometimes it's just the paint - the color, texture and pattern - but I'm always looking for it to be both, one feeding off the other and back again. I prefer to use a limited amount of recognizable imagery - just enough to engage the viewer and set out a path of discovery that is personal and not too obvious.
Above all, I try to paint skillfully and intentionally - allowing myself to be satisfied with a finished painting only when I truly feel the connection.
